From the UK it's no more than an hour flight to Amsterdam and that combined with the city's natural charms makes it a hugely popular short break destination for Brits. Despite being notorious for its liberal culture which embraces a very active red light district and has legalised the smoking of cannabis, Amsterdam also has a host of charms to entertain those visitors who just fancy some good clean fun.
The city is not the political capital of the Netherlands (that honour goes to the Hague) but it is certainly the cultural centre of all things Dutch and that's why leisure travellers are looking for cheap flights to Amsterdam as opposed to anywhere else in Holland.
How to get there
There are a great range of scheduled and low cost flights to Amsterdam from the UK. Among others Easyjet, British Airways, British Midland and KLM all operate very regular services to the city from UK hubs such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool. Fares can get as low as £40 return if you book well in advance with a low cost carrier and as low as £60 if you pick the right deal with British Airways. To get the best deal on your Amsterdam flights just make sure you can be flexible on your dates and avoid peak times such as Fridays and Sundays.
What to do
Aside from the inevitable eating, drinking and making merry there's plenty to do while in Amsterdam. Here are just a few ideas for your consideration once you've booked your flights. Amsterdam is home to several museums notably one each for Rembrandt and Van Gogh, both famous sons of Holland. Why not hop on a canal tour and take in some of the sights of Amsterdam from the water? Or perhaps take in the haunting Anne Frank House, where the famous Jewish girl and her family hid from the Nazis.
Whatever you fancy doing make sure that you shop around for your flights. Amsterdam has loads to offer for a short break but there's no need to pay a fortune for your tickets.
